What is the best virus protection?

I have Windows Vista, Gateway MT6916 notebook. This is a 32 bit operating system and use Intel processors Centrino Duo (Dual Core). I currently have Windows Live OneCare, which ends in October. People at Circuit City recommended to me, however, Gateway does not recommend altogether. I think the people at Circuit City recommended because the laptop has a smaller memory base ... Windows Live OneCare and use less memory. I would assume the person making the operating system for computers would know best, right? Onecare.live.com why you think they do not like it? Also, what would you say is the best. Give the comparative and explanations. I really appreciate it!
